I think it's because many people have a deep-seeded belief (one that is justified to a certain degree) that humans have been systematically destroying the ecosystem for the last 200 years, and that we cannot continue to do so indefinitely. The idea of Global Warming appeals to this sense that the ecosystem is in trouble and that we need to do something about it. And that this can be the lever by which we stop corporations and governments from doing further damage. It's a quantifiable change that few people can argue with (that the temperature is rising, the glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising). It's something we'll all have to deal with eventually. And they find it quite easy to believe that humans are responsible for this change, because we've done so much damage elsewhere in more visible ways (air pollution, water pollution, etc.) That said, personally I think there is strong evidence that CO2 levels are forcing an increase in temperature overall, but it's complicated by the fact that some of the things we do (for example, put smog in the air) actually reduces temperature by reflecting more light out to space). Some scientists have argued that the temperature would have risen more quickly had it not been for coal-fired power plants putting smoke in the air.

They don't like skiing on shrunken glaciers.
