  • I think a bigger caliber would make a louder sound because it would use more gun powder.
  • Larger caliber weapons will produce louder decibel levels. Some common firearm loudness levels are: 22 rim fire rifle 126dB SPL 30/30 rifle 158dB SPL 12 gauge shotgun 3-inch magnum 157dB SPL .357 magnum 164dB SPL Damage to hearing can occur when the ears are exposed to sustained levels of sound over 120dB. Considering the loudness levels of gunfire, it is apparent why shooters often suffer from hearing loss. The damage from exposure to gunfire usually occurs a little at a time, making the effects not immediately evident. Diminished hearing or ringing in the ears after noise exposure, either temporary or permanent, are both indications of damage to the hearing nerve. Various types of ear protection are available, and are usually sold with a noise reduction rating, NRR, to provide an indication of effectiveness. Earmuffs will provide 23dB of protection while combining them with foam earplugs will yield 29dB of protection. Custom earplugs, which provide a decibel reduction of approximately 25dB, are more comfortable than muffs, and are more convenient in the field.
  • Generally speaking, larger caliber weapons are louder. This is only partially true, however, as black powder and shotguns are often louder than equally large rifles.
