Why do dogs like having there belly rubed?

    In addition to the physical pleasure, I think there's another aspect to it.

    In wolf/dog hierarchy battles, an animal showing its belly is displaying submission. Sometimes, the more dominant animal attacks anyway.

    So, for a dog to turn up its belly and be treated to nothing but gentile stroking is a very reassuring. It tells the dog that the 'pack leader' (the human) can be trusted completely.
