  • In 1755 one of the results of King George's War Britain gained control of Nova Scotia. Governor William Shirley didn't think it would be safe to to allow French nationals to reside in British (formally French) Nova Scotia. He feared that the Acadians would still remain loyal to France and would be threat from within if allowed to stay. At the start of the French and Indian War the Governor of Nova Scotia, Colonel Charles Lawrence, expelled six thousand Acadians to the lower 13 colonies. Some returned to France and to the French Caribbean, whereas others trickled back to Nova Scotia. Sixteen hundred trekked to Louisiana between 1765 and 1785. There they settled in the marshland of south Louisiana. They kept the speech patterns and language of the France and have evolved into a unique sub-culture called Cajuns. Cajun is a corruption of Acadians.
