They could be in that sometimes semi identical twins or fraternal twins are more alike each other than identical twins are! To know that you have to check their blood types. If they have different B.T then they are not identical for sure. But DZ or polar body twins may or may not have the same blood type.

It is possible that they are polar-body twins. It is also possible that they are not. About the only way to answer that question for sure would be for both of them to have their genetic markers read, to see how similar they are.

Why so complicated? They were born on the same day, but don't look exactly alike, therefore non-identical twins.

@ The Supernatural Big Bang Warrior That has nothing to do with anything. Twinning is a biological concept, not an aesthetic one. It's determined by zygosity, not what they look like. There are identical twins who hardly look a thing alike, fraternal twins who look identical, and polar twins who can go either way

Identical twinning = post fertilization split embryo, sharing DNA, always same gender, always same blood type

Fraternal twinning = two separate eggs are fertilized by two separate sperm and implant in the uterus, different dna sets, can be same sex set, or male/female, semi identical, or non-identical

Polar Body twinning = one egg splits in two, both halves fertilized by separate sperm. Since the sperm determines sex, but the egg carries half the genetic markers, you can have Polar twins who are identical, non-identical, same sex set, or male/female set. This theory has yet to be proved, but it is the best current working hypothesis for explaining identical appearing twins of opposite genders.
