  • There are two ways to download content. You could either download the entire video and then play it back, or you can stream the video. Option 1 is very slow and involves downloading the entire video before you can start watching... option 2 is faster because it allows you to watch the video as you download the content. Its likely that a video will play faster than it can download and therefore the computer downloads a few seconds worth of the video until it thinks it can finish downloading at around the same time the video stops playing. A buffer is designed to prevent jerky play-back when streaming content by detecting how much it needs to download in advance in order to maintain a smooth play-back. Also, while you are on the internet your connection speed is not constant. A buffer is designed to take that into account and have enough content downloaded to compensate for the ups and downs in connection speed.
