it works as it increases our confidense in that divine nature that has protected us for several thousand years and wilprotect us for many several thousand years

If you are praying for a ailing person, eg. who is a solidly strong believer in God, that could effectively cause God to act as the placebo mechanism; to inspire the mind to heal the body..the same idea as ingesting a fake medication. Or at least give some sense of wellness to the believer that you care. Otherwise praying is like feeling sorry for someone.. doesn't do any good.
