Joint pain in the fingers ranges from temporary discomfort to permanent disability. Causes of joint pain range between a variety of genetic, environmental and physical conditions, and should be properly diagnosed and treated by a physician.
Arthritis
The most common cause of joint pain in the fingers is arthritis, an inflammation of the joints.
Carpal Tunnel
Carpal Tunnel is the compression of one or more nerves in the wrists. It is a repetitive stress injury, most often seen in younger people who spend a great deal of time typing and texting.
Infection
If a cyst or abscess forms in the finger or on the hand, bacteria can enter the joint and cause mild to severe pain.
Abrasion
A surface abrasion, cut or scrape, can give the illusion that the actual joint is aching, when it is the skin above or near the joint that is in pain.
Damage
If you bend your finger too far backward, a small piece of bone can pull free where the tendon is attached; likewise, small fractures will also cause pain in your finger joints.
