Whenever products containing asbestos are disturbed---such as by foot traffic---the tiny fibers can be released into the air. From there, asbestos from broken tiles can be drawn into the lungs and cause tissue scarring and inflammation that can lead to long-term health problems. There's even some evidence of an association between household asbestos exposure and gastrointestinal and colorectal cancers, and cancers of the throat, kidney, esophagus and gallbladder.

On the Other: Staying Clear Reduces the Risk

Most of us have regular, though limited, exposure to asbestos from sources as common and benign as air, water and soil. The danger is in prolonged contact over an extended period. Broken flooring in an area where family members regularly spend time can merit concern. However, the risk is reduced if the breakage occurs in a room or area that sees little traffic or if the affected area is covered by carpet or other material.

    Bottom Line

Your asbestos risk is dependent on your degree of contact with the affected area. There's no reason to panic if you discover broken asbestos tiles, but plan to have them professionally removed as soon as possible.
