Computer users can control how printed characters look by selecting from a list of type styles, or fonts. Choosing and installing new fonts over a wide variety of applications is common and not difficult, although the process is slightly different depending on what application and operating system you're using.

Choosing fonts in programs

In most programs that allow you to choose fonts---word processing, spreadsheet and photo-editing programs---changing fonts is simply a matter of selecting the desired font in the drop-down menu of a toolbar. When you select the font, its name is almost always displayed in its own font style. For example, "Courier New" is displayed as the recognizable typewriter style. You can also adjust the size and add bold or italic to your font. If your program doesn't have an immediately visible drop-down menu for font selection, choose the "Format" menu and the "Paragraph" or "Character" sub-menu to alter font styles.

Managing fonts

Fonts are managed by the operating system. If you find yourself with too many fonts or you've reached a limit in the number of fonts installed, you can remove them by deleting them from the Windows font folder. Reach this folder through the control panel. A list of fonts is displayed, and deleting them is only a matter of right-clicking or hitting the delete key. Be careful not to delete Windows system fonts as it may cause programs to work incorrectly. To manage and delete fonts on a Mac, browse to "/System/Library/Fonts," choose the font and select the desired function.

Installing new fonts

The installation of additional fonts is slightly more complicated as it can involve using a third-party software application to install a group of fonts. This is common when purchasing and downloading many fonts at once from a website. To install individual fonts, the easiest way is choosing "Install New Font" in the File menu of the Windows font folder. There you can select the destination of the font you'd like to install. Make sure you have uncompressed them first. If you're using a Mac, simply drag the font you wish to install to the System Folder and follow the prompts.
