  • The after-effects of smoking depend on whether you are a long-term or short-term smoker; however, the after-effects of both should be weighed before lighting up. The American Cancer Institute relates that nearly half of all smokers who continue smoking will die because of the habit.

    Short-Term Effects

According to Quitsmokingtips.com, one of the immediate short-term effects of smoking is increased heart rate and blood pressure, which is a signal that your body is having to work harder than it should. Reduced appetite can occur in some people, but certainly not all. Other short-term effects include bad breath, coughing, yellow teeth and fingers, reduced immune system as well as reduced potency in men and reduced fertility in women.

    Long-Term After-Effects

The body's respiratory system is the part of the body that undergoes the most destruction; pneumonia and chronic bronchitis are two common respiratory infections resulting from long-term smoking. Emphysema is another terrifying and debilitating lung disease that is irreversible, incurable and often fatal.

    Cancer

According to the National Cancer Institute, smoking is a leading cause of cancer as well as death from cancer. In addition to acute myeloid leukemia, smoking causes cancers of the lung, mouth, esophagus, larynx, throat, kidney, bladder, pancreas, stomach, and cervix.

    Vascular Disease

Because blood flow to the body's extremities, such as legs and feet, decreases while smoking, peripheral vascular disease (PVD) can occur, which causes incredibly painful ulcers that are usually impossible to cure. Also of note, most doctors won't perform surgery on patients with PVD unless they stop smoking.

    Quality and Quantity of Life

Factors such as how long a person has smoked, how much they smoked, how old they were when they started and whether they are male or female are all elements that make each individual distinct. According to the information gathered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) between 1995 and 1999, adult male smokers lost an average of 13.2 years of life while female smokers lost 14.5 years of life because of smoking.

    Pregnancy

Smoking can hurt a woman's pregnancy. Miscarriage, premature birth, stillbirth and low birth weight in infants are all possible if you smoke while pregnant. According to the American Cancer Society, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is also linked to smoking while pregnant.
