SSL is an acronym for Secure Sockets Layer. SSL is a protocol introduced by Netscape to securely transmit documents over the Internet. An SSL certificate encrypts the data and initiates a secure communication channel for data transmission. The SSL certificate implements two keys for data encryption. One is called a Public Key, which is known to everybody, and the other one is called a Private Key, private to only whom the message is directed. An SSL certificate consists of the information about the owner of the certificate. An SSL certificate is used to encrypt important data while performing online transactions. An SSL certificate is essential to protect a website and for earning the trust of visitors to that website. TLS, short for Transport Layer Security, is the recent successor to SSL.Encryption
