<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Diesel engine lubrication requirements
Diesel engines require motor oils with higher detergent additives to remove soot and contaminants from the high-compression diesel cycle. The American Petroleum Institute gives motor oils ratings for use in different types of engine. Motor oils suitable for diesel engines start with a "C" such as CF, CG-4, CH-4 and CI-4. CI-4 is the latest ratings and meets the requirement for the post-2007 emission-compliant diesel engines.
On the Other: Select an appropriate oil
CI-4 or CI-4 Plus rated oils are required for diesels produced starting in 2007. CG-4 API-rated oil is sufficient for older car and truck diesel engines. CF and CF-2 rated oils should be selected for off-road, two-stroke and severe-use diesel engines.
Bottom Line
The owners or service manual will designate which API oil grade should be used in a diesel engine. If the manual requires a grade that is no longer available, such as CD, using a newer, higher rated oil will not cause any problems.
