  • It is not wise to fly with a sinus infection. The pressure, ear pains and headaches increase with cabin pressure, creating quite uncomfortable if not intolerable discomfort. But, when avoiding flying is not an option, here are some tips to make your flight with a sinus infection more bearable:

    Sit up straight

Keep your head upright and sit straight in your seat. This might sound obvious, but being extra cautious not to bend forward will avoid adding to the pressure in your head. This probably means not reading, as a natural reading position in flight necessitates bending your head down at least slightly. You might also ask a flight attendant for assistance in storing your overhead or underseat personal belongings.

    Take a pain reliever

Try taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen about a half an hour before boarding your flight. Pressure increases as the flight takes off and during landing, so take another dose, as directed, for longer flights. This will act as an ant-inflammatory for a pounding headache or will ease earaches.

    Use a decongestant

Take a decongestant. They can help relieve a stuffed-up nose caused by a sinus infection and help your sinuses to drain, making it easier to breathe while in flight.

    Drink water

Drink plenty of water. It's a great idea to purchase a bottle of water to take onto the flight with you, in addition to the in-flight service beverage provided. When you're sick, you need to drink plenty of fluids.

    No alcohol

Avoid alcohol before or during your flight. Alcoholic beverages can increase sinus pressure when you have an infection.

    Note

Always consult your doctor before taking any over-the counter drugs.
