One of my favorite movies, but I cannot watch that scene. I did some searching, but could not find any info around the filming of the dog`s death. What I did find implies it may have been real, which disturbs me. They did not have the technology when the film was made to create only the illusion of the dog being killed. Animal rights were not as protected during that time as well. Most movies will have "No animals were harmed during the making of this film" if it applies - not sure if this is in that movies credits. It was sadly quite likely real.

There were animal treatment laws on the books in film at the time (not that long ago). They did it the same way they filmed horses tumbling to death in cavalry and indian battles in even the cheap westerns. Animals, especially dogs, are trained to "fall and play dead" on cue. It is just a matter of speeding up the film at a certain frame or two to make it appear sudden.

Maybe they got a real rabid dog.
