They create such enormous universes with so many characters. There are only so many superpowers possible and only so many general personalities (I'm not talking about details and nuances here) that overlap is inevitable. In addition, once an archetype has been developed, it becomes so ingrained in fandom's perception that it's hard to break away from that mold.

In what way do you mean? In the end, when dealing with "superheroes" there is only so many variations you can do with superpowers and basic origin stories. Although, if you think that "avengers" and "Justice League" are similar, I would urge you to actually read some of the more modern stories- they are very different! It's much the same as television- why is every Lifetime movie so similar to every other Lifetime movie? They are different- but you need to go past two-sentence descriptions.

Marvel and DC often make jibes at one another by making characters that are essentially satires of the other companies characters. Marvel does this more than DC Marvel: Sentry, and Gladiator=Superman Shi'ar Imperial=Legion of Superheroes Deadpool=Deathstroke the Terminator Squadron Supreme/Supreme Squadron=Justice League Captain Mar-vell= Martian Manhunter Thundra=Wonder Woman for DC Lobo= Wolverine Black Spider (Batman villain)= Spider-man Batman Beyond's Terrific Trio=Fantastic Four
