  • Onychorrhexis are brittle nails which often split vertically, peel and/or have vertical ridges. This irregularity can be the result of heredity, the use of strong solvents in the workplace or the home, including household cleaning solutions. Although oil or paraffin treatments will re-hydrate the nail plate, one may wish to confer with a physician to rule out disease. http://www.hooked-on-nails.com/naildisorders.html
  • my grandfather has that on his finger ever since he was 20. he's gone to a salon to have it glued together and make it look like it wasnt split and he has had to go back often to get redone b/c it keeps spliting. but what they do to his finger has made the nail weak over time do not try this yourself go to a salon to have it done. also consider trying to have the nail removed so it will grow fresh again and maybe it wont grow back split...ask the salon person more about it to see if they could do it
  • I dont' think finger and toe nails can heal back together when torn, you will just need to let it grow back out. Might need to put a Band-Aid on it to keep from splitting further. If no pain or cut, you can just let it grow back out. If any problem, seek medical help.
  • I don't want to sound like a pragmatacist here but to be dead honest: please grin and bear it. One time I left a finger tip in a friend's automatic garage and he pressed the down button. My left hand's 4th nail fell clear off within 4 days. It takes about 4 weeks. There is no cure. You are going to have to tough it out. I know, I've been there.
  • Well, for me i think the best solution is to simply wait it out and the toenail will fix itself. Because a nail grows from the root, the split shoud disapear afetr a few weeks, assuming you clip your nails regularly
  • just like everybody else - you either have 2 options, clip the loose part or leave it alone. i'd "leave it alone" since it doesn't hurt and just allow the nail to grow out. just keep the area covered with a band-aid so the nail doesn't catch on your socks and other things.
  • Be grateful that this didn't happen to you: after completing a 22-mile mountain hike, my feet were in such rough shape that I'd jarred the nailbeds of both big toes and both little toes. Within 4 days all four were black, and not long after all the nails detached from my toes. Didn't have ANY nails to glue or whatever. (They did eventually grow back, though, but it was pretty gross for a while, especially peeling the old nails off...)
  • i had the nail next to my big toe split straight across the middle. i reached down and gently removed the broken nail and now it's growing back in normally. didn't hurt, didn't bleed, it was sort of amazing. i would not suggest trying to glue any nails especially on toes.
  • This has happened twice with my daughter on her big toe. She once had a door slammed on this toe about 7 years ago. Each time it split (horizontally) I cut off the part that was raised, and there was a thin nail underneath it already growing, so her toe was never completely exposed. As it grows, it pushes the nail up. I guess there are different causes that may have different solutions.
  • Cut off as much of the toenail as you can, then you can put glue on it if you want or you can keep a bandaid or tape on it for a few weeks. If you want to have someone else work on it go to a podiatrist, not a salon.
