  • Supplementing the other poster... In Canada, it is illegal to add caffeine to drinks that do not naturally contain it or whose ingredients do not naturally contain it. Hence, no root beer sold in Canada contains caffeine. Neither does Mountain Dew, which I understand is caffeinated in the US. And certainly not orange pop! Unfortunately, the law can be bypassed. A common additive to drinks these days is guarana, which contains high levels of caffeine. Nobody adds guarana for its taste, just for its caffeine content. It is a way to 'hide' the addition of caffeine to drinks. Since guarana is an ingredient that naturally contains caffeine, it slips by the law and can be added to drinks which do not otherwise contain any caffeine. The manufacturers, of course, do not mention that their drinks contain caffeine - only guarana is listed. Not good for people with caffeine intolerances. [Edit: I examined the labels on all the brands of root beer at one grocery store and I found one that contains caffeine. I'm not certain how they managed to do this legally, unless one of the basic ingredients also contains caffeine. Unlikely, though it is also unlikely that it was made in the US and imported. Interesting note: the diet version of the same brand has no caffeine. None had guarana. An unsettling discovery, to say the least. Just say no to caffeine in drinks that don't need it - this product is off my list.]
  • Some brands contain caffeine, others don't. Check the label.
