  • Cerebral palsy (CP), a neurological disorder that affects muscle coordination and body movement, has a vast impact on society. Those affected by cerebral palsy range from patients themselves and their families, to educators and lawyers, among others.

    The Patient

Cerebral palsy directly affects the patient by creating physical limits for the person. Some CP patients are still able to contribute to society, while others with severe cases are be unable to contribute.

    Family

A child with cerebral palsy affects his whole family. Kids with CP are more of a financial burden than the average child. Family vacations may also have to be planned around the physical limitations of the child with CP.

    Financial Effects

As of 2003, the average lifetime expenses of cerebral palsy per capita came to $921,000. This figure did not include expenses such as emergency room visits and residential care.

    Education Effects

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), implemented in 1975, mandates that government-funded educational services be provided to children with CP up to the age of 21. Part of the No Child Left Behind Act calls for educators to encourage and support the educational endeavors of cerebral palsy patients.

    Job Stimulation

Therapists, lawyers and caretakers are just a few groups of people affected by cerebral palsy. Therapists who work with CP patients are ensured to have long-term clients. Some lawyers specialize in CP cases, whether the task is getting compensation for a doctor's error that caused the cerebral palsy or fighting for the rights of a cerebral palsy patient. Caretakers can gain part-time or full-time positions to take care of a CP patient who needs lifelong care.
