    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

When it comes to renewing your passport, the earlier you get the process started, the better. While it is possible to get a passport renewed very quickly in New York, it will require a trip to the New York Passport Agency in New York City. For those who cannot renew their passports by mail, Passport Application Acceptance Facilities are conveniently located throughout the state.

    Renew Your Passport by Mail

The easiest way to renew your passport in New York, or in any state, is by mail. You can renew your passport by mail provided that it is undamaged, it was issued when you were 16 years old or older, it is no more than 15 years old and your name is unchanged or you can legally document a name change.

Applications and instructions are available at the Department of State's Bureau of Consular Services website: http://travel.state.gov

    Passport Application Acceptance Facility

If you cannot renew your passport by mail, and you don't plan any foreign travel within 14 days, you must go to a Passport Application Acceptance Facility. These are usually found at Post Offices and County Clerk buildings. For a list of Passport Application Acceptance Facilities in New York, go to: http://iafdb.travel.state.gov/.

Visit the New York Passport Agency

If you are traveling to a foreign country within 14 days or you need a foreign visa within four weeks, you must visit the New York Passport Agency, located in New York City. Applications are accepted by appointment only, and you must call ahead to make the appointment. Appointment hours are between 7:30 a.m and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

You can also avail of optional or special services (expedite, rush or file search) when renewing your passport. You will be needing as well a US Passport Application form.
