According to the Wordnetweb at Princeton.edu, domain name means are "strings of letters and numbers (separated by periods) that are used to name organizations and computers and addresses on the Internet."
Purpose
Domain names give us clues into a website's purpose. For instance, USANetwork.com is the name of a website that is owned by the USA Network and has a complete listing of its shows and TV lineup.
Extensions
The ".com" part of the domain name is called the extension. In addition, there is ".gov," ".edu" and ".org." A ".com" extension is usually for a business or for commercial use. USA.gov will bring up a listing by the U.S. government and its different websites. USA.org will bring up a web page with many non-profit organization links. Education or domain names associated with a school or college will have ".edu" as an extension.
Other Countries
Other countries have different extensions--for example, ".ca" is Canadian and ".jp" is Japanese--to identify where the domain name was created.
Registration
You can find many websites that will register a domain name for a fee, such as FreeDomain.co.nr (see Resources for a link).
Warning
Domain names can be tricky and confusing. Some websites have explicit content despite having innocent-sounding domain names.
