The heart is constantly pumping blood to the body via the arteries. Blood pressure is measured by calculating the force in the arteries when the heart pumps (systolic) and when the heart is at rest (diastolic). High blood pressure often results when the blood is being pumped too forcefully or has a hard time circulating through narrow arteries,
Symptoms
For many people, there are no outward symptoms of high blood pressure. But, dizziness, light-headedness, headaches and nosebleeds may occur, particularly in severe cases of high blood pressure.
Diagnosis
The only sure way to establish high blood pressure is to have it checked with a blood pressure monitor. According to the National Institute of Health, a systolic reading of 140 and a diastolic reading of 90 or over is considered high blood pressure.
Complications
High blood pressure greatly increases a person's chances of having a stroke, a heart attack, or kidney problems. High blood pressure is also associated with higher incidences of aneurysms and blood clots.
Treatment
A physician will usually prescribe a low-sodium diet, regular exercise, and stress reduction. If lifestyle changes aren't working or the blood pressure is particularly high, medications may be prescribed.
Prevention
Regular exercise, healthy eating, stress management, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco decrease a person's chances of developing high blood pressure.
