Portable Document Format, or pdf, is a file format that enables you to compress document files into one easy to read file format. But what programs use this format, and what can it be used for? You can design pdf files in Adobe Acrobat. You can insert data from your word processing program into these files. Adobe Reader is a program that enables you to open and read contents of pdf files. It is free for download. PDF files are not limited to one operating system. You can open these files on any operating system platform. With zip format you can compress files into a group of separate documents. But with pdf files you can combine them all into one document. Anyone who needs to compress documents into one file can use pdf file format. For example, the U.S. House of Representatives uses this file format when it creates draft legislation it hopes to pass into law.Adobe Acrobat
