Bitter melon is a part of both Chinese medicine and Chinese cuisine. Whether stir fried, stewed or boiled in a soup with pork, bitter melon is considered both delicious and very good for your health. There are several varieties of bitter melon. Some are white, others are green. Green bitter melons have multiple varieties that include ones that are more or less bumpy and range from long and thin to short and fat.

Supermarkets

The first place to look for bitter melon seeds in Hong Kong is medium and large supermarkets. In the spring, many supermarkets will stock seeds. Hong Kong may not come to mind as a place for gardening, but container gardening on balconies and rooftops is common. Keep an eye out in small independent convenience stores and small neighborhood grocery stores, they may well have bitter melon seeds.

Seed Stores

The second place to look in Hong Kong for bitter melon seeds are seed stores that cater to larger scale gardeners and farms. If you are staying in a larger hotel, ask the concierge to find one or two of these larger seed shops. If you are a Hong Kong resident or staying in a smaller hotel, taxi drivers often know the location of many shops. Find an English speaking taxi driver and ask. After asking several, you will likely find the right shop.

Dry Your Own

Another simple way to get bitter melon seeds in Hong Kong is to buy a bitter melon. Seeds in larger melons are bigger and are often more viable. Cut the melon open and remove the seeds. Dry the seeds in the sun and place them in a paper envelope for storage. If you want to grow different varieties of bitter melon, simply gather the seeds from different varieties, dry them and carefully mark the envelopes with either the name of the type of melon or with a quick sketch of the melon if you don't know the name of the melon.
