Boat fuel tanks are designed to be filled to an exact amount, and no more. Over filling a tank can cause water pollution, and is a fire hazard. Personal boat tanks typically range in capacity from 3 to more than 50 gallons. Some boat owners opt to fill their tanks to a little less than the maximum amount for safety reasons. A safe amount is about 90 percent of capacity.
