Growing your own garden can be both a rewarding hobby and way of life. Perhaps one of the most important aspects of growing a successful garden is applying a good fertilizer. Fertilizer feeds your plants and keeps them looking great throughout the season. However, applying too much fertilizer can kill your plants.
Calculate Square Footage
Before you can figure out how much fertilizer to apply in your garden, calculate the area of your garden. Use a tape measure to measure the width and length of your garden. Calculate the square footage for your garden by multiplying the length and width measurements.
Read Instructions
Read the manufacturer instructions. If you are using a packaged fertilizer, always read the instructions. This will help you to better determine how much fertilizer you will need to apply based on the square footage of your garden. Most manufacturers will assume that a broadcast method is being used. Broadcasting means that the fertilizer is spread uniformly over the surface.
Organic Fertilizers
If you are using an organic fertilizer like manure, you can typically spread the fertilizer evenly across your garden. For example, manure that contains little bedding can be spread in a layer of 1.5 inches across the garden bed. As always, be sure to ask fertilizer providers for specific instructions in application. This is important, because each type of fertilizer requires different instructions and application methods.
