  • Mustang Island consists of retirement homes and vacation rentals as well as a state park. But with overdevelopment of the Texas Gulf Coast, the future of the island has come into question by developers and conservationists.

    Geography

Mustang Island, located along Texas' Gulf Coast, is an 18-mile long barrier island connecting Corpus Christi and Port Aransas.

    History

The island got its name in the 1700s as a result of a wild horse population. Because of its connection to Padre Island and its abundant accommodations for tourists, the island's development history continues to pave the island's future.

    Future Development of Port Aransas

According to Port Aransas' master plan, the future of development along the island's northern tip is geared toward growing the existing economic and tourism sectors of the island while promoting environmental awareness.

    Future Development of Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi, at the southern tip of the island, adopted a future land use plan in 2005, which promotes future development to be tourist-oriented in nature, while establishing a balance of nature and development.

Future Development of Mustang Island State Park

Mustang Island State Park covers approximately five miles of beachfront property between Port Aransas and Corpus Christi. Development of the park is restricted, but surrounding land continues to be developed for vacation and condominium rentals.
