  • The purpose of deleting history is usually to remove any Web activity from a computer's browser so it no longer appears as having been accessed. Each Web browser is different, but all of them have this feature, and the process only takes about a minute to complete. By understanding simple navigation and how to access certain settings in your Web browser, you can delete all of the browser history, no matter how old or recent it is.

    Deleting History in Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is used on most PCs, so the navigation is quite simple and is based on the Windows operating system. First you'll need to open your Internet browser. Most Internet browsers are easily accessible by an icon on your computer desktop. Once the browser is open, locate the Tools option in the navigation menu across the top of the browser window. Click on the first option listed, which is the "Delete Browsing History" option. When its dialog window opens in the middle of the screen, simply check all of the boxes listed, as they represent all of the different areas of Web-browsing history stored on your computer. Click on the "Delete" action at the bottom of the dialog window to confirm and finalize the action. This process can take anywhere from 10 seconds to approximately 2 minutes, depending on the amount of items that are stored in the Internet browser's history.

Deleting Internet Explorer History through the Control Panel

Here's another way you can get to your Internet options to delete all of the history; the process leads to the same settings, but the navigation is different. Click the "Start" icon on the computer's task bar, and go to your Control Panel. Select the "Classic View" option in the upper left corner of the Control Panel window, and click on the Internet Options folder once all of the icons are rearranged. Under the "General" tab, which will be the first tab to appear, click the "Delete" action under Browsing History. The Delete Browsing History will appear from this route as well. Check all of the boxes, and click "Delete."

    Deleting History in Mozilla Firefox

Although Firefox navigations differ from Internet Explorer, deleting history can be just as easy. First ensure that the Firefox browser is open, then click on the "Options" tab in the Tools menu. (This option is referred to as the Preferences tab on a Mac.) Locate the Private Data section in the Options window, and click on the "Clear Now" action. Boxes pertaining to history, Web URL addresses and form data---such as search bar entries, cookies and caches---will be listed. Check all of the boxes that apply to the types of Web history you desire to delete, and click on the "Clear Private Data Now" action to remove all of the history that applies. These items and entries will be permanently deleted from the browser.
