Unlocking a car via an electric signal, commonly called power locks, is nothing new. Now, though, keyless entry has become the new standard for how a car's locks can be opened more conveniently.
Keyless Entry
Keyless entry operates via the use of a radio signal being sent to a car. This signal is received and triggers the unlocking mechanism.
Fob
A fob is a small ornament that's usually attached to a chain or ring. In this sense it's a keychain that contains the necessary radio signaling device to open a car's locks.
Functions
Keyless entry fobs (the keychain-sized signaling device) can lock and unlock a car's doors, as well as signal the burglar alarm.
Distance
Keyless entry fobs must be fairly close to a car in order for the signal to be received. The distance is usually between 5 feet and 20 feet at the absolute maximum.
Remote Starters
Keyless entry fobs are also able to trigger a remote starter, if a car has one. The theory is the same as keyless entry, except the radio signal triggers the car's ignition.
