LCD stands for "liquid crystal display," and refers to that way the screen operates on that particular type of TV. The technology allows for a number of benefits which other TVs don't possess, including a much clearer picture. Unlike old cathode ray tube TVs, LCD TVs provide high-definition images--up to 1080p in many cases--which are much sharper and clearer than standard-definition images. While plasma TVs also provide high-definition content, they use much more power than LCD TVs (even when turned off). LCD TVs have an estimated lifespan of 16 years, assuming normal viewing conditions (six hours of viewing a day). That provides exceptionally good value for the money spent. LCD TVs are much lighter than plasma screen TVs, making them easier to move. Plasma screen TVs have difficulty in particularly high altitudes; thin air has an adverse effect on the xenon and neon gasses encased in the plasma. LCD TVs have no such problems, and can be viewed at high altitudes without difficulty. www.tv-advisor.com: advantages of LCD TVHigh Definition
