Heparin decreases the blood's ability to clot, helping prevent harmful clots from forming in the body. The drug will not dissolve clots that have already formed, but may prevent further damage caused by clotting.

Taking Heparin

Heparin is usually administered in a hospital by a health professional. The drug is injected into the bloodstream.

Side Effects

Constipation, dizziness and heavy bleeding from cuts are possible side effects of heparin use. High blood pressure is not a known side effect, according to MayoClinic.com.

Drug Interaction

Using aspirin, gingko or citalopram while taking heparin is usually not recommended. Tell your doctor about any drugs you are taking before taking heparin.

Other Conditions

Tell your doctor about any health conditions you have before taking heparin. Blood disease, allergies and liver disease may affect heparin's effect on your body.

Warning

Stay away from activities where you may be cut or bruised, as heparin makes bruising and bleeding happen more easily.
