The Tropics. Alaska is a bit too barren for my tastes, in the tropics you may have the oppurtunity to say... Stop on a desolate beach and curl up for a nap on a beach towel in the sand with a bottle of tequila and a good book. Whereas if you tried to do that in Alaska, the tequila (And probably you for that matter) would freeze, and I'm not a big fan of tequila-sickles myself.

I have taken cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean, and Mexico. My favorite is the Caribbean, but all were fun. Alaska was gorgeous, but cold even in the summer. I'm glad I went once, but probably would not go again. My favorite excursion was taking a helicopter to a glacier and hiking around on it. My cruise advice is not to waste time shopping. There are shops from outside each of the cruise locations that set up shop only during the cruise season. They are not local stores and you could buy these products online or back in the states. The cruiselines encourage you to shop at these stores. I would recommend spending your time doing some activities and seeing things that you cannot do back home.

I lived at the beach for years and I've had 50 years of hot hot hot and sunshine. I love Alaska and most points North...or way south:-) I'll take the Alaska cruise, though I'd prefer to take the ferry where you load your car on it. We've done that and it was great! Get off and stay at each little port, stay awhile, move on. Grab a cruise to the glaciers and fjords. Great fun!

Personally, I have cruised Alaska twice and believe everyone should do so once in their life. I have cruised the Caribbean, South Pacific, Mediterranean dozens of times and prefer these areas over Alaska but I am getting picky on the ship and ports now that I have been to so many different islands.
