<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: The Truth of the Matter
The short answer is no---hats don't cause baldness. In fact, according to the experts at AskMen.com, "In order for the hair to fall out, the hat would have to be so tight that it cuts circulation to the follicles."
On the Other: Discrediting the Myth
The myth that hats cause baldness may have been spread by military men, who often experience hair loss and blame their required headgear. In reality, most men who join the military and begin wearing hats do so at around the same time that male pattern baldness typically appears. The connection is simply a coincidence.
Bottom Line
Genetics are the most likely culprit in male pattern baldness, which causes permanent hair loss. While hair loss can also be caused by stress, poor diet and hormonal changes (like those following pregnancy), such hair loss is temporary and the hair grows back when the condition is reversed. Steroid use can also increase hair loss or accelerate the process, but the effects may not appear for several years after use begins.
