Though word-processing and page-layout applications produce documents simply and inexpensively, such documents are difficult to access unless you have the programs that created them. PDF files are one solution to this problem.
Description
A PDF (Portable Document Format) file, which was developed by Adobe Systems, is a method of capturing and storing formatted information so that it can be shared easily with anyone who has access to a computer.
Standard
PDF follows a formal, open standard known as ISO 32000, which is maintained by the International Organization for Standardization. This certification ensures that the format will continually be updated and supported.
Creating
Many programs, like Microsoft Word, have built-in features for producing PDF files. You simply select this option from the one of the feature menus. The file is then formatted and laid out exactly like the printed version.
Viewing
Viewing a PDF file only requires Adobe Reader, which you can download for free at adobe.com. The utility is available in many languages and runs in Windows, Mac, Linux and Solaris operating systems.
Acrobat
If your application does not have built-in PDF processing, you can buy Adobe Acrobat to create and manage PDF files.
