  • There is no doubt that a python is a dangerous snake and more than capable of killing a human being. The reticulated python can grow to be nearly 30 feet in length and has the ability to constrict a person to death.

    Time Frame

Various instances of pythons killing and eating people have occurred in Indonesia, with one being a 14-year-old boy and another being an adult female. Both fatalities came in the early part of the 20th century.

    Function

Pythons possess rows of sharp teeth designed to hold their prey while they wrap their coils around it. The snake kills by constricting its victim, compressing its lungs so it cannot breathe.

    Considerations

Pet pythons are responsible for their share of deaths. One example is a 25-year-old woman from Virginia Beach, who perished when her pet snake wrapped around her neck and asphyxiated her.

    Warning

Small children are especially at risk from pet pythons, with a case in point being the July 2009 death by strangulation of a Florida toddler after the python escaped from its tank and attacked the child.

    Size

The Humane Society says that since 1980 as many as a dozen people in the U.S. have died from pet python attacks, with five children among the victims.
