Tamoxifen is a cancer medication. A common brand name is Nolvadex. In particular, it is used to treat breast cancer, especially breast cancer that has spread to other parts of your body. Tamoxifen may also be used to prevent breast cancer in women with a high risk of developing it.
Effects
This drug is an anti-estrogen, which means that it cancels out the effects that estrogen has on tumors. Because some tumors can be activated by the presence of estrogen, Tamoxifen may help prevent the their growth.
Prevention
Taking Tamoxifen as a preventative measure against developing breast cancer may place women at a higher risk of developing cancer of the uterus, as well as blood clots in their lungs and stroke.
Potential
Tamoxifen may compromise your immune system and make you more susceptible to becoming infected with a cold or flu. It may also reduce your body's ability to clot blood.
Warning
You may be unable to use Tamoxifen if you have high cholesterol, vision problems, a history of blood clots, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or if you are taking certain medications.
Side Effects
Tamoxifen may cause side effects, such as constipation, hot flashes, muscle pain, nausea, fatigue, weight loss, vaginal discharge, chest pain, fever and chills.
