What is the meaning of the popular saying"A rolling stone gathers no moss"?

Since the stone is always moving, it doesn't have a "north side" to gather moss. Sometimes the side that faces north rolls until it's facing south, where the sun hits it, so the moss doesn't grow. Also, it's rolling in a river, so it grows algae instead.
