That's the problem everyone wants to convert people to their way of thinking only they don't know what their thinking because they are to busy listening to other people. Like everyone knows more then you. It's clear everyone knows everything about others religion but fail on their own beliefs.

The first thing the atheist has to recognize is that he/she also doesn't know that there isn't a god. The atheist should approach the Christian in the same manner. He/she would need to convince the Christian that neither of you know for a fact either way. You both are relying on the information that has been given to you in your life time. The atheist looks at things with a skeptical viewpoint looking for someone to prove their assertion and then bases their beliefs on that evidence (or lack thereof.) The Christian is basing their beliefs on their spiritual advisors, parents, etc. are telling them truth even if they can't prove it. It's important to find the commonality before you can convince someone to drop long held beliefs and you can't let that person get defensive which will probably be the toughest part. +3

As a believer, your best hope is to ask how God has moved in their life. Of course you run the risk of meeting those of us who have "unbelievable stories" or "actual divine encounters" that there is no current explanation other than "God." But, to get back to the point, if you can get them to confess their lake of genuine encounters you MAY be able to create doubt.

You speak as if being an atheist is an evangelical calling. Atheism is not a religion, it is an absence of religion. Therefore to change from a Christian to an atheist all you need is to stop believing and start looking for facts instead of blind obedience. There is no process or ceremony. I expect most atheists at onetime thought of themselves as belonging to a religion. There came a time when they no longer felt the connection. i.e. instant atheist.
