  • First of all, female dogs do not menstruate or have "periods". They go into "heat" or "estrus". Second of all, getting your dog spayed and not allowing her to have a litter will afford her many health benefits such as preventing some cancers.
  • Best age to breed is the second heat cycle after she turns 18 months of age. Dogs never stop going into heat. I've had newfoundlands still cycling away at 10-12 years of age. It's best to use that time to check your dog's health with vet exams, X-rays and heart checks, and some showing in confirmation classes to see if your dog is good enough for breeding and also trying to find a suitable stud dog if she's found to be worth breeding. Better yet is to just not breed a dog that is less than ideal for it's breed standard and enjoy it as a loved pet. Breeding is expensive, time consuming and not to be taken without much research and study.
