How reliable is the M-16 rifle?

The M-16 is an extremely reliable, if under-powered, rifle. The new generation of battle rifle will probably return to .30 caliber. +5

Well its power is pretty low but so it its recoil. with its recoil and fire rate ratio so perfect its a pretty reliable gun and can last for ever. . . well longer then you will if you need to use it. :)

generally as reliable as any semi auto on the market. but it is a tradeoff between ultimate functionality over accuracy. accuracy requires precision and precision increases opportunity for malfunction. We can't expect a firearm to keep functioning without cleaning and maintenance. while I see the M16/M4/AR15 class of firearms as quite reliable, they will malfunction if not maintained.

Take care of your weapon and it will take care of you. I don't understand why some people say the M16 is under powered the 5.56 round the M16 fires tumbles on impact small entry wound nasty big exit wound.
