How reliable is the M-16 rifle?

• The next one will probably be the SCAR (article on wikipedia), which Rangers are carrying in Afghanistan, which can be chambered for .223 or .30 if I remember.

• You should know as you have put in 30 years of service in the armed forces, Major.
  In India .303 is the standard rifle issued to police personnel, I believe.

• But somewhat heavey, I think. I have seen policemen on sentry duty leaning on their rifles. While marching they hold it over their shoulders to support their weight. But with a bayonet fixed to its tip these rifles look deadly. Has great scare value, I suppose. I think mostly these rifles are used for their scare value only without loading it with ammunition. For the police to open fire they need the orders from the District Magistrate.

  The college students who join the National Cadet Corps are given .303 rifles for target practice. I was in the NCC while in college. These rifles do give a real bad kick to the shoulder when we fire them.
  I thought .303 rifles are somewhat antiquated. The riot squads use sten guns and AK47 rifles. Pistols and revolvers issued to the police personnel are .33 I think, or is it .44? I don't know. But they hardly ever use them.

• I've fired a 1903 Springfield rifle many times. Has a worse kick than the Enfield .303. It's mostly a matter of positioning the rifle properly on your shoulder to absorb the recoil. Yes, those old rifles are heavy. About twice the weight of an M-16. I don't have any experience in India, but the police and military in Pakistan use mostly 9mm pistols.

• Its a long time since I had a chance to fire a rifle at a target bulls eye. About the pistols I was only guessing. Here as ownership of a gun needs a license most people including criminals don't have guns. Good thing. So the police hardly ever get a chance to fire except during practice, I suppose.

• it works as designed. it was not meant to kill the enemy but wound causing a load on their resources.
  many soldiers would prefer to KILL the enemy so they will stop returning fire. this is usually solved by shooting the bad guy 3 or 4 times but that takes time and empties your magazines quickly.
