  • The tides tend to be bigger in full moon and new moon than the quarter phases. It's well known that the moon exerts a tidal effect on the Earth. The Sun also exerts a tidal effect about half the magnitude of the moon's. At full and new moons, when the earth, moon, & sun are more or less aligned, these forces are aligned rather than being at right angles to each other. Tides, however, are complex because of time lags and other local factors.
