the same way authors write about their characters living 100 or more years in the past, they reserch that place in time, its customs, and othewise.

You need to incorporate places you know about in your story unless it is science fiction.

If these are suppose to be real places such a France or Africa, then you should study about them. If this is your imaginary world, then do a good job making up something that is somewhat realistic with a fantasy twist!

You just have to do some research, either online or in the library. +5

I have never really "earned a living" off of what I ended up going to college for.... However...going to college was NOT a waste of time...as you seem to feel it is for you... College teaches many valuable lessons that can positively impact what we do in our lives...such as HOW TO RESEARCH information...how to stick to something, even if we feel like quitting... At this point, I have an unfortunate sense, from your comments that you are no where near having the mental agility, drive or commitment needed to write a book, let alone a "Best Seller." It DON'T COME EASY...babe...you have to do the work, face rejections, and be willing to listen and do what a publisher wants....if you want them to seriously consider your work.. If you won't make time now, to research...you will be unlikely to get where you want to be...it's part of the job....it appears that you have had plenty of time to putz around here on Answer Bag.... When I'm working on a book...I don't show up here too often, or I limit my time here.

That's where imagination comes in. You have to have lots of imagination and creativity.

I suggest that your first book should be about something you know. If it works out well, you can do research in more exotic locales. Since you are new at this, start at home then work outward from there. Most fiction novels that I enjoyed were written with people that started small and worked their way outward based on their experience and knowledge gained from previous novels. Another way to do it is to invent your own world or societies like the great science fiction novelists. If you base your story in real locations you must make yourself familiar with them either by research or travel. It is a real turn-off for me when someone writes about a place, with which I am familiar, and I see the blatant flaws in the descriptions. I happened to be reading a book based in Wales in the Anglesey Island area. Since I was there at the time the book really spoke to me and I greatly enjoyed it. If it had been inaccurate, I probably would has stopped reading it and ignored the author in future book selections.

research... you do not have to have explored every inch of the place, just know details about the specific spots he goes...

I have some published articles, and I never been to college. They never ask me anyway...guess they liked my work. I have a total of six articles published with two pending for future publication. I am not barging or tooting my own horn, I am merely saying if you have been to collage are attending at this time...you have a better chance. So write, write and write. Good Luck to you.
