Help answer this question below.
To my knowlege, it's the only movie I know of that filmed an actual death, so in that way, it brings out my spiritual side. I feel a natural reverence for it that I don't feel for other movies. +5
No, I think Amityville horror was scarier.
Absolutely. It has been part of my life! I saw it in the 70's as an underage teenager, paid a small fortune for it on video in the early 80's and now have the DVD. It gets me every time (I'm not keen on the "other" version - Freidkin's re-edit, though)
absolutely! amazing movie! definitely one of scariest ever made... not to mention disturbing. remember the bloody crucifix part?
Being in a catholic elementary school at the time
Oh yes.....
No, but I respect your opinion.
I'm more a fan of the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"...but to each his (or her) own! :)
I havent seen it in a while but, when I watched it 20 years ago it scared the Crap out of me.
Hmm no I wouldnt say so... I dont really get scared by films, but I dont think the Exorcist is the scariest, maybe something like Nightmare on Elm St, or Halloween!
My own choices for that title are:
Nosferatu -- the great silent film.
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari -- another unforgettable silent.
The first three Omen movies.
The Black Cat -- visually stunning, an intelligent script, and wonderful, subtle performances by Karloff and Lugosi.
And speaking of Lugosi, his version of Dracula.
Id have to say , for me , it was, I was so scared after that movie I couldn't sleep properly for weeks, and to be honest, I dont really watch scary movies now........
Back in 1970's yes that was scary.
Without a doubt!
I would agree .. I had lots of nightmares about that!!
Sorry but not even close. The Shining is easily scarier.
yes! i saw that one as a kid
Not really. Maybe it's because I don't come from that generation, but the movie is fairly old, and physically seems comedic to me.
As well, the concept of it, in my opinion is nowhere near plausible, so it doesn't have that to make up for the near comedic value of peas soup vomit and crucifix sex.
However it is still an awesome classic, and I totally enjoy it. But the scariest ever? Nah.
At the time it was made, it probably was the scariest movie I had ever seen.
no the scariest movie ever is The Shining, brrrr
Perhaps it is the scariest movie of its time, I don't agree that it is the scariest movie ever made. It doesn't scare me.
I sure do agree! Still gives me the ebee gee bees.
Not for me, the Saw movies freaked me out much more.
Absolutely.
I would call The Evil Dead (1982) a very close second.
Those are the only movies that still give me an eerie feeling when I watch them alone at night.
The Exorcist was scary for sure but I don't think any movie ever scared me like Psycho did.
It was the creepy, but the scariest for me was Alfred Hitchcock movies, The Birds and Psycho. For years I hated taking long showers. And as for the Birds, whenever I see crows in a large group, I still get the creeps. I've met a lot of people over the years who felt the same way about both.
no but it is right up there with a few others i love to watch. +5
I dont know about scariest ever. But pretty damn creepy!!:)
No, not agree, is silly not scary, I laugh when see video of it.
What idea or concept hasn't been used in the horror genre yet?

What are some good horror movies that aren't overly scary? Things like "Orphan."

You're reading Would you agree "The Exorcist", released in the early '70s, is the scariest movie ever made?

One of the priests, M. Do you remember the scene where the priest fell down the flight of stairs? It killed him.
by Phillis - Zacks little sister on November 3rd, 2009
Yes! I remember that scene but no, I DIDN'T know it killed him! Was he a "stunt" person? I'm assuming that was reported in the newspaper. How else might you have heard about it, if NOT? Thanks for your clarification, Phillis! And sorry it's taken me so long to "rate" your answer! Just now came upon it!
by Millenium - The Mysterious M. . . GONE! on November 3rd, 2009
I haven't been getting many of my comments either! So don't worry about it. It's AB, not you.
.
He was only an actor, not a stuntman. I don't know if it was in the paper because I was pretty young when it came out, maybe 10 or so, but I've watched several documentaries on the making of that film, with several of the cast being interviewed. That's how I found out.
by Phillis - Zacks little sister on November 3rd, 2009
Oh! Well. . . . . .there you go! Geez! That's TERRIBLE! Hm! I wonder about lawsuits from THAT!? Next time I watch it, I'll pay closer attention! Thanks, Phillis!
by Millenium - The Mysterious M. . . GONE! on November 3rd, 2009
My pleasure!

The actor you're talking about is Jason Miller, who not only lived through the filming but when on to many other roles. The only actor to die during filming was Jack McGowran, who dies from ccomplications of the flu. There are, however, many urban legends associated with the film.
by Gideon on November 5th, 2009
Hm-m-m-m-m! Interesting, Gideon! Watcha think, Phillis? We appreciate your further commentary, Gideon! Nice to know that he did not, in fact, die if your accounting is correct! And, you're right, there ARE many "urban legends" associated with that film; like that of "Poltergeist"!

Barculuv provided a link on another question of mine that supports what Gideon just said! I have no idea WHY peole would televise such an all-out lie. I have no answer to that, except to say that I believed it when they said it. Let me find the link to barculuv, and I'll post it here.

This topic inspired me to ask a question. Barculuv's response can be found in Beavis' thread, the second answer to my question.

Yeah! I enjoyed reading the details to Barculuv's answer, Phillis! Thanks for sharing that! No! I don't see you as "stupid". Not at all! And I'm sure Gideon doesn't either! It was an honest mistake from whence you drew your conclusion! Something anyone of us may have done, as well! No biggie! It's all sorted out now! That's what AB is all about! Friendly discussions and "gentle" corrections! Okay! MINE can be a little brazen, sometimes <be quiet, Wiz> but I MEAN well! Mercy please! LOL
by Millenium - The Mysterious M. . . GONE! on November 5th, 2009
The thing is, I don't like misleading people. When I make a mistake, I try to do my best to fix it, even if it means looking like a butt :)
by Phillis - Zacks little sister on November 5th, 2009
And that's why you're not stupid, Phillis. Anyone who spends time here will eventually get out some bad information. I've done it. This sparked some interesting discussion, though.
by Gideon on November 5th, 2009
It was pretty interesting, wasn't it! I got some great answers to that question, thanks to Lady M's question (more than I cared to know, as it turned out).
It is times like these that make me proud to be part of the AB community. Thank you both, for being so good to me :)
by Phillis - Zacks little sister on November 5th, 2009
Thank. . . .YOU. . . .too, Phillis! I agree! The AB community, for the MOST part, CAN be quite rewarding!
