Joshua stepped up to the plate when Moses died and immediately set into motion the strategies for conquering the Land as G-d had commanded. He showed military leadership by sending spies ahead of the troops and organising various battle plans as the Israelites went about conquering Canaan. He was clearly a brave and courageous military leader who led his troops from the front (a sign of true leadership). He also showed compassion- first to Rahav who had protected the spies he sent to Jericho and later to the Gibeonites who came to make peace with and live among the Israelites. Joshua also ensured that the Israelites committed themselves to the beliefs of their forefathers and that they observed their rituals and traditions (he had all the men circumcise themselves after not having done so for years in the desert). Most importantly, as a spiritual leader, he followed G-d's directives to the letter, even when these included challenging or unpopular instructions.
