  • Start at the beginning with "The Iliad." If you want something closer to our time, then try "Middlemarch."
  • I would suggest anything by Charles Dickens, specifically David Copperfield. The Bronte sisters or Jane Austen are also enjoyable to read.
  • Jane Eyre!
  • I don't really know what counts for classics these days...it appears to be anything pre-modern, but I would suggest Victor Hugo and John Steinbeck ("East of Eden" especially)...if you want to go further back Dante's Divine Comedy
  • All Quiet on the Western Front Catch 22 Anything by Jack London
  • Don't forget Thomas Hardy. Not the most cheerful reading, but very deep and meaningful. 'Jude the Obscure' is a powerful novel, analyzing how much a human soul can withstand...and keep going.
  • Go to your local library and draw out vol 1 of 'Great Books of the Western World' compiled and edited by a panel of experts through the University of Chicago. Follow a particular reading guide on a particular theme or just read and enjoy. All great books written from the year 'dot' are as written, unabridged and uncensored. cowboy
  • AnaRoM mentioned Steinbeck already -- I'd also suggest John Steinbeck anything, especially "The Grapes of Wrath" -- after reading the book, I found that ever-so-beloved film version incredibly overrated and trite compared to the book. [ I know, I should not compare the book to the movie - - they are two different art forms. Let's just say I found the book much more profound. ] Dostoevsky's "The Brothers Karimozov" is another one I've liked +5
