Maybe in roman times or older, food for sex was the go.

Money didn't always exist, but that doesn't mean forms of payment didn't either. They were probably given other types of currency, valuable items, such as cattle.

I think prostitution has been around since the birth of civilization as we know it.
It boils down to supply and demand, just like any business - if the demand is there, then someone will be willing to supply that demand.
Although money has been around for a very long time - the first written records of money date back to 1200BC in Southern Algeria, and it's interesting to note that this written record (a stone inscription) relates to twelve shekels being paid into an account held by Algar Hammurabi in return for the use of his daughter.

I think the cliché about prostitution as the worlds oldest profession is based on a theory that Adam and Eve didn't literally eat a fruit to commit the first sin, but that the fruit was an allegory for them having sex; and that that was the first sin.

Personally, I very much doubt that this theory is correct.  If it is, then perhaps it'd be more apt to say that the computer trade is the oldest profession; in that Adam and Eve traded an Apple for a Wang.

The first prostitutes were paid with food.

Even in the primate world male monkeys will pay for sex with food.

My grandmother was friendly with guys during the war so she would get to eat and bring home food for her kids. Then again that is how she got some kids. Don't get me wrong, my grandmother wasn't a prostitute but she was willing to be friendly for favors.

  • There are other ways than having a profession to acquire the money or tradeable goods. Someone who works in a gas station or second hand store will have money, but I don't think their occupation would stretch to being called a profession.

I agree. The first hooker got paid somehow, otherwise she wasn't a pro.

So it must have been Farmer or perhaps Cave Decorator and Defender or... anything that a guy did well enough that the woman wanted.

    Shoemaker?
