My grandmother was friendly with guys during the war so she would get to eat and bring home food for her kids. Then again that is how she got some kids. Don't get me wrong, my grandmother wasn't a prostitute but she was willing to be friendly for favors.

I think prostitution has been around since the birth of civilization as we know it. It boils down to supply and demand, just like any business - if the demand is there, then someone will be willing to supply that demand. Although money has been around for a very long time - the first written records of money date back to 1200BC in Southern Algeria, and it's interesting to note that this written record (a stone inscription) relates to twelve shekels being paid into an account held by Algar Hammurabi in return for the use of his daughter.
