  • Frontline is a flea and tick control product made by Merial, which uses the active ingredient fipronil to kill fleas and ticks and prevent re-infestation.

    How Frontline Works

According to the manufacturer's web site, when you apply Frontline to a small area (usually between the cat's shoulder blades), the product spreads over the body by a process called translocation. When applied, these products are gradually dispersed by the pet's natural oils. It is then "wicked" onto the hair over the next 30 days. The translocation process can take up to 24 hours to complete.

    Drooling

If your cat licks its fur after Frontline is applied, it might drool excessively. This is because the product has a bitter taste, not because of toxicity. Applying Frontline between the shoulder blades makes it more difficult for the cat to lick the area after application.

    Skin Irritation

According to Merial, Frontline can cause temporary irritation at the application site. There has been anecdotal evidence of hair loss or thinning hair, but this has not been proven to be a Frontline side effect.

    Safe for Mothers and Kittens

Frontline is EPA-approved for use on pregnant or lactating females and kittens as young as 8 weeks old.

    Overdose Warning

Be cautious when applying Frontline, and do not apply more than the recommended dosage. Applying too much product can cause lethal toxicity. Do not attempt to measure your own dosage or use Frontline for dogs on your cat without consulting your veterinarian.
