Asthma is a disorder of the airways that causes attacks of coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing and a tight feeling in the chest. About 40 percent of women with asthma suffer from attacks right before menstruation, according to a study being performed by the University of Texas.
Additional Symptoms of Asthma
In addition to the hallmark symptoms, asthma can also cause chest pain, nasal flaring, abnormal breathing patterns and pulling of the skin between the ribs when breathing.
Causes of Premenstrual Asthma
A flare-up in asthma symptoms prior to menstruation may be caused by fluctuating hormones, a lowered immunity against illness or stress related to premenstrual syndrome according to Women's Health Forum.
Timing
Those who suffer from premenstrual asthma tend to experience an attack or worsening of symptoms approximately four days before and throughout menstruation. Some women may also experience symptoms during ovulation.
Treatment
Birth control pills or other estrogen supplements may help prevent or alleviate the symptoms of premenstrual asthma according to a study performed at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
Prevention/Solution
Understanding your cycle's effect on your asthma can better prepare you to deal with flare-ups. Keep rescue medications on hand and consult your physician if symptoms worsen during a particular time of the month.
