Even though acid reflux is a condition more commonly associated with older people, it has also been observed in newborns. There are a number of methods for treating it that are specific to babies. Feeding a baby frequent, small meals rather than a few larger ones can help reduce the effects of acid reflux. If your baby is drinking from a bottle, supplementing her formula with crushed cereal to increase the viscosity might prevent reflux. The added calories might cause her to overeat, however. Kids Health states that the position your baby is held during feeding might have an effect on his acid reflux. Hold him upright during and after feeding. When he is lying down and awake, place him on his stomach. Some cases of acid reflux in newborns have been linked to food allergies. Dr. Alan Green suggests that cow's milk and soy proteins in formula are the most likely culprits. In the case of breastfeeding, cow's milk, soy, nuts and eggs are suspect. Reducing consumption of these items might help curb acid reflux. Medications such as famotidine (Pepcid) and ranitidine (Zantac) have been useful for treating acid reflux in babies. Other antacids are not approved for children.Frequency
