I once had an Iranian meal and which came with a small bowl of dark red spice in granular form. It was delicious - do you know what the spice might be?

    it might be "saffron" which smells great and colors food a rich yellow or it might be "sumac" which has a tart flavor

    I would most probably be dukka. Middle Easteners like dipping flat bread in oil and then into the dukka before eating. I am not too sure of the spices involved.
